Marketed as a captivating event filled with positivity and cherished memories, the festival's inaugural edition was expected to feature lanterns illuminated by burning candles, gracefully floating in the night sky tethered to the ground by lengthy strings.
However, the excitement quickly turned to disappointment when participants were informed of the cancellation of the candlelight release due to unforeseen circumstances. Despite the setback, organizers attempted to salvage the situation by providing attendees with lanterns, pens, and LED lights, encouraging them to pen their wishes and participate in the tradition, albeit in an underwhelming, modified form.

The abrupt cancellation of the main attraction led to a surge of discontent among attendees, many of whom took to social media platforms to express their grievances. Long queues formed as participants sought refunds for their S$50 lanterns, feeling misled and dissatisfied with the turn of events. Complaints about the lack of communication and transparency regarding the cancellation added to the growing frustration among attendees.
The event organizer, Asian Couture and Boutique, cited safety concerns as the reason behind the decision to withhold the candlelight release. However, specifics regarding these concerns were not provided, leaving attendees puzzled and dissatisfied with the explanation.
Adding insult to injury, reports surfaced that the festival had not obtained the necessary licenses and clearances to meet safety requirements mandated by local authorities, including the Singapore Civil Defence Force. This revelation further fueled the disappointment of attendees, raising questions about the event's planning and execution.

Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) issued an apology for any inconvenience caused and directed ticketholders to contact the event organiser for refunds: Steven Lau at 9455 5212 and Shiermie Bautista at shiermie85@gmail.com and 84248725.
However, the fallout from the festival underscores the importance of proper planning, communication, and adherence to regulatory requirements in organizing large-scale events to ensure the safety and satisfaction of attendees.
As the fallout continues, the Singapore Sky Lantern Festival serves as a cautionary tale, reminding organizers of the importance of transparency, accountability, and diligence in delivering on promises made to attendees.
