Your design portfolio is like your identity and branding as an Interior Designer. As much as you should make your portfolio visually attractive and professional, you still have to present it in your own style and what defines you as a designer. If you like it minimalist, then go for it.

“Your portfolio should set you apart from other designers. As much as it is important to design it visually pleasing and unique to you, the content is also very crucial.”

Simple tips to guide you on building your interior design portfolio:

1. The first page should showcase your CV with your photograph. It should be visually attractive and professional. Keep it brief and easy to read!

2. The second page should be the content page.

3. The next page should be showcasing your projects. Select your best projects and choose between 5 to 7 projects to be put into your portfolio.

4. The sequence to showcase your projects can be arranged according to years or categories.

5. If you choose to arrange them in yearly order, it would be better to arrange them from the latest project to the oldest one.

6. If you choose to arrange them by categories, you can divide your projects into big headings such as commercial design, hospitality design, residential design, exhibition design, etc. Then you can place your projects under each category accordingly.

7. Show the progress of your projects from initial concept till the final design. Depending on what your future employer is looking for, it is always good to show your thinking process and your technical skills in all your projects. Emphasise on which design skills that you do best! You never know if that design skill might be what your future employer is looking for.

8. Basic Guidelines for explaining your project:

Project Brief ➝ Conceptualisation (hand sketch or diagram) ➝ Design Translation (hand sketch or diagram) ➝ AutoCAD and Photoshop Skills (rendered Furniture Layout Plan and Elevations) ➝ 3Ds Max/SketchUp Skills/Sketching and Hand Rendering (3D Rendering Visualisation)
