Earlier this year, 4 January 2021, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) of Singapore has started conducting the trial of Parking@HDB, a smart parking system at Punggol Northshore. The first trial was conducted at the PL80 car park, which serves the two newly completed Build-To-Order (BTO) flats, Northshore Residences I and II.

Let us take a look at what are some of the smart features of this new parking system, Parking@HDB:

  1. The car park will have no gantry barriers as there will be cameras to register the vehicle plates when entering and exit the car park. This will create a seamless entry and exit flow for the users.

  2. The new system, Parking@HDB, will also implement in-app notifications to notify motorists who park only for a short while regarding the start and end of their parking sessions and also on the parking charges.

  3. There are also smart cameras installed in the car park to detect motorists who park their vehicles where they are not supposed to park. If motorists have downloaded the Parking@HDB app from Apple App Store or Google Play Store, they will receive automated warnings to remove their vehicles from an unauthorised lot to prevent them from getting a fine.

  4. The payment method to pay the parking fees will now be done using credit or debit cards via the Parking@HDB app. As the vehicles exit the car park, the parking fees will be charged and deducted automatically from the credit or debit card that has been registered to the app, even without the need to activate the app manually. Hence, motorists no longer need to insert cash cards into the in-vehicle unit or worry about insufficient money inside the cards when they have downloaded the app.

  5. Colour-coded light indicators will also be installed on top of every parking lot to indicate lot availability for motorists. HDB mentioned that “green means lots are available for short term parking while amber means lots are reserved for season parking.” When the lots are occupied, the light indicators will be switched off. The colours will be adjusted according to needs.

Meanwhile, other features will be launched gradually by HDB and they will also extend the trial to other car parks in the Northshore District. Based on the results of the trial and our feedback, they might also eventually implement this smart parking system outside of Punggol Northshore.

It will be exciting to see this smart parking system be implemented islandwide. What do you think?
