According to The Business Times, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob mentioned that Malaysia will halt exports of 3.6 million chickens a month from Jun 1 and scrap the approved permit requirement for importing wheat until production and prices stabilise.

The export ban will definitely affect Singapore as nearly 73,000 tonnes of chicken were imported to Singapore in 2021, and one-third of that came from Malaysia. Besides, chicken meat and chicken rice are widely consumed in Lion City.

One serving of chicken rice in Singapore is expected to become more expensive starting next month. Due to the complaints from Malaysia about the supply shortages and the rising chicken prices, the country has decided to restrict chicken exports likely until Malaysians have enough supply.

Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said that frozen chicken supply is still available amid the temporary disruption of the chilled chicken supply. However, the question is whether Singaporeans will be okay with frozen chicken replacing the fresh chicken used in their beloved chicken rice dishes.
